Young man on Snowdonia mountain path on mental health retreat for refugees and asylum seekers

Rawand's experience of our retreat with Future Leaders; for refugees & asylum seekers

The Mind Over Mountains event was absolutely amazing. I felt free, connected to nature and experienced a real sense of belonging. It was such an incredible environment to be in. I loved the walks as a group and I even did some running which in now a huge passion of mine.

I live in a big city, surrounded by buildings, but I can still feel the positive effects from the Mind Over Mountains event -- I feel refreshed, energised and my physical and mental health have been boosted!

"The event made me feel like I belong to something -- it gave me a purpose."

I attended a two-day Mind Over Mountains event in February 2023. It was part of the Future Leaders Programme* that I was on at the time.

Those of us on the Future Leaders Programme had only met once in person prior to the Mind Over Mountains event which was held in Snowdonia. I was nervous before the event as most of the interactions with the group had been online. Although we had met once before in person, we hadn’t really got to know each other properly.  However, it was such a great opportunity to meet the others properly and to learn about their journeys - we soon started to open up to each other as the event progressed. I have kept in touch with some of the other attendees via social media and Whatsapp - we support each other and celebrate each other's achievements.

I loved the walks as a group and I even did some running which in now a huge passion of mine. I also enjoyed the meditation sessions which gave me some space for myself.

I have introduced some of my friends to Mind Over Mountains and they have been inspired to get out and enjoy the mountains too. If anyone is thinking about joining one of these events, I wouldn't hesitate in encouraging them to go for it. The beauty of nature makes you feel comfortable with your feelings and emotions, and gives you a real sense of belonging. Everyone has their different struggles but to be with others in nature is just such a wonderful feeling.
