I went on the beautiful Edale walk with Mind Over Mountains in May. It was a wonderful day together, out in nature, in the sunshine. The mountain leaders were totally on top of the route and looking out for everyone, and the counselling team kind and professional. You never know who your fellow walkers are going to be until you turn up, and I find that such a positive – it allows you to step away from your regular life, meet new people who don’t judge you, and be part of a band of kindred spirits; it's as much a part of the growth experience as being out and about, exploring the landscape.
Mind Over Mountains was there when I needed it – utterly welcoming, encouraging and respectful. The walks made me feel that I wasn’t alone, and more confident. They formed a key part of my overall recovery. Now that I’m much improved, I still love to go on the walks. Each one is a total pleasure, whatever the weather, and the uplifting effect stays with me for months afterwards.
I’ve been on about six walks in the Peaks with the charity so far, after hearing about it a few years ago. I was at the time having a crisis at home, my mental health had really suffered and I was low and struggling.
